Protein is the celebrity of macronutrients; you will rarely hear a bad word spoken about protein, unlike the other macronutrients carbs and fat. Protein is revered, and we are all told to make sure we are getting enough. When we think about protein for many of us, our first thoughts turn to animal products, but there are lots of vegetarian options that are high in protein.

Eggs are a good source of protein and nutrients but if relied on too heavily it can result in the development of sensitivity or allergy, this happened to me a year ago, and I had to take a long break and do some gut healing before I could have them again.

It is, therefore, a good idea to have other options on the table to help us get the right amount of protein in our daily food intake. Before we get into those foods, we should first discuss some important information about protein: what is protein, why do we need protein and how much protein should we be getting.

What is Protein?

Let’s think of protein as a long string of pearls. Each one of those pearls in the string is an amino acid. When protein is digested, we end up breaking a part that string of amino acids into individual amino acids. Therefore, if we take a group of amino acids and string them together, we end up with protein.

Each amino acid plays a different role and can do amazing things, for example, an amino acid called phenylalanine ends up as dopamine, a neurotransmitter that makes us happy. There are two types of amino acids, essential and non-essential.

Now non-essential doesn’t mean that we don’t need them it just means we can create them ourselves from the essential amino acids. They are called essential because we must get them from our diet, and we can make the remainder, non-essential, ourselves.1

Why Do We Need Protein?

We need protein for many reasons, without it we would fall into poor health, and our body would start to break down muscle tissue to get the amino acids we need to survive.2

Protein’s arguably most well-known role is its ability to help with repairing and building muscle mass.3 This is why protein supplements have become such a large industry. Protein, as I mentioned creates neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, melatonin to name a few.

These neurotransmitters send signals around the body, and without them, we wouldn’t be able to function. Small Meals vs Big Meals For Fat Loss

Does Eating Smaller Meals More Often Help You Lose Fat and Build Muscle? (3 Strikes, You're Out)

Show Notes:

People are often told that eating smaller meals more often is better than eating larger meals less frequently for two mains reasons:

1. Is that frequently eating small meals will boost or "fire-up" your metabolism which will cause your body to burn more fat.

2. That regularly eating small meals will keep your muscles fed without leaving excess food to be stored as body fat.

Research Links and Study Results:

1. PubMed.gov: study compared one group that ate 6 meals a day vs. a group that ate 3 meals a day to see if increased meal frequency helped with fat loss.

The conclusion of this study was that "increasing meal frequency from 3 to 6 meals per day has NO SIGNIFICANT EFFECT on 24-h fat oxidation."

2. International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSA): study compared two groups that ate the same total amount of food, one eating it in 2 meals and the other in 6, to see if higher meal frequency elevated metabolic rate.

The conclusion in this study with regards to metabolism was that "it appears that increasing meal frequency DOES NOT statistically elevate metabolic rate."

3. Research Paper by Dr. Layne Norton:

PDF download: Layne Norton on Meal Frequency: this paper Dr. Layne Norton suggests that "one consume 4-6 larger protein doses per day instead of 6-8 meals and wait 4-5 hours between meals rather than 2-3 hours."

Wrap-up:

Eating smaller meals more frequency doesn't seem to have any addition benefit when compared to eating larger meals less frequency. How often you eat is something flexible and subject to your lifestyle and personal preference.

What DOES matter when it comes to losing fat and build muscle is making sure you consume the correct amount of total calories and macro-nutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fats) on a day to day basis.

2. Lentils (low in fat, high in protein, slow digesting complex carbohydrate)

3. Green Tea (natural thermogenic and weight loss properties)

4. Dark Leafy Greens (high in micronutrients, high in fiber, low in calories)

5. Grapefruit (low glycemic index food, slowest digesting citrus, good post workout)

6. Greek Yogurt and Cottage Cheese (0% fat while cutting, high in protein and calcium)

7. Lean Beef (93/7 or better, high in protein, iron, creatine and vitamin-b)

8. Chicken or Turkey Breast (skinless, low fat lean protein source)
